A frame taken from Deepsea Challenge 3D, a documentary in which Canadian director James Cameron attempts to become the first man to dive alone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, famous for being the deepest point in the Earth’s crust, and in which in March 2012 he reached a new record depth for solo diving at 10,898 metres. The fact that this was only the second time in history that a human being reached such depths is due to the prohibitive cost of such a feat. Very few people have descended beyond 4,000 metres, and over 75% of these very deep regions remain unexplored. Equally, 95% of the ocean depths are still unknown.
