Monaco. Passionate about the Sea

In conclusion, what are, according to you, the three major challenges that mankind will have to overcome over the next ten years?

Mankind will have to face the ravages of climate change if we fail to invert scientific predictions. The consequences would be planetary in scale, and would lead to the disappearance of islands, towns, cities and perhaps even entire countries. Climate-induced migrations will become increasingly important, and the question of climate refugees a major concern. The devastating effects of climate change are already increasingly frequent. Another major challenge will be the exhaustion of our natural resources. Every year, we outstrip the world’s capacity for production earlier and earlier. On the 1st of August last, we had already used up all that our planet is able to produce in a single year. Our current lifestyles require Nature to make too many sacrifices, and it is essential that we turn ourselves towards more sustainable, innovative and equitable economies capable of feeding a growing world without devastating the environment. Last but by no means least, threats to the good health of the world’s oceans, leading to irreversible change and less biodiversity, demand our closest attention. Human activity is endangering our planet, and a challenge that we must all overcome together is that of finally becoming aware of these problems in order to build solid foundations for a new world that will have learnt from its mistakes. Essentially, this is perhaps the supreme challenge that will determine the next ten years: successfully anchoring the need to preserve our planet as one of the fundamental pillars of our societies. The next generations must find answers to these problems, defining a new and more just view of the world, and I have great faith in their capacity to do so.
